This study investigates Iranian EFL learnersʹ knowledge of different types of English
collocations in order to determine whether collocational competence should be left to
naturally develop as learners become progressively proficient in English or could
collocation- awareness raising activities enhance collocation recognition and awareness.
The need for a certain amount of consciousness put it; consciousness raising approach which
involves consciousness raising activities can be a great source of help for language learners.
Language is a means of communication among people and language fluency influenced by
how this language is acquired. It argues that learning a word in isolation does not
necessarily help second language learners become successful communicators. This research
asserts that a major source of difficulty in learning a language naturally is the unfamiliarity
of subjects with the English collocations due to insufficient exposure. Also supporting
Krashen`s theory of exposing the learner to a large amount of language input, using huge
number of collocations is taken as an advantage rather than a problem. Teaching
collocations, whatever is their numbers, is an effective way in learning. So the researcher
used several collocation awareness raising activities explicitly in the classroom. This paper
offers some categories of (CAR) activities which are effective in learning collocations. The
results show explicit teaching of collocation facilitates the acquisition of them and raising
awareness of collocation in EFL\ ESL learners.
