Cupric oxide nanoparticles also known as black 15 nanopigment is a p-type semiconductor with a narrow bandgap which is suitable for paint, catalysis, electrochemical cells, field emission devices and gas sensor applications. Despite considerable efforts devoted to the preparation of the nanosized cupric oxide, there is a lack of information about green chemical preparation methods. Here, as a part of the desire to save the environment via green chemistry practices, we report a novel method to synthesize CuO nanopigment from nontoxic and biocompatible chemicals where no pollutant or combustible side product is produced. Nanosized cupric oxide was successfully prepared through a novel green chemical method using a biomolecule of protein building block. The formation of single phase nanoparticles is confirmed by XRD θ–2θ patterns and FTIR spectra. TEM and SEM micrographs indicate the formation of nanoparticles with a particle size of about 45 nm. This study emphasizes on green chemistry and synthesis of nanomaterials through ecofriendly methods to save our planet and its reservoirs for future and next generations.
