In a spray dryer absorber the removal of carbon dioxide by Ca(OH)2 slurry as absorbent was investigated. To study the process performance theoretically the process was simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. To consider the chemical reaction in the model, an empirical correlation for reaction rate was obtained through experimental data and added to the CFD model of the process as a surface reaction via user defined function. Predictions of the model for removal efficiency, outlet gas temperature and humidity were compared to the experimental data and the mean average absolute errors were obtained. The model predictions in comparison to the experimental trends are fair.
