This paper proposes an improved structure of a five-level grid-connected inverter which uses lower number of
switches compared to the similar topologies. FFT analysis of the output voltage also illustrates the improvement of the total
harmonic distortion (THD). The multilevel inverter reliability is one of the key parameters in the renewable energy systems. As
so, it is investigated based on IEC-TR-62380, since IEC-TR-6280 covers all of the multilevel inverters components such as
resistances; capacitors; and especially MOSFETs as well as IGBTs. This standard also considers the package type
effectiveness and the system performance. As a result, the reliability evaluation based on IEC-TR-62380 become more
accurate than the other standards, in the proposed converter. Also, the reliability evaluation results illustrate more reliability in
the proposed five-level inverter compared to other structures. Simulation results carried out by Matlab verifies the
performance of the proposed five-level inverter
