Interferometric methods applied to SAR images acquired by two separate antennae, can be used for the determination of terrain elevations from space by analysis of phases of the received signals, to an accuracy comparable with accuracies of elevations determined by electro-optical systems. Differential interferometric SAR can determine elevation changes between two epochs to an accuracy of the order of cms. This paper will review the principles of differential SAR interferometry, and give results of tests undertaken on data from the European Space Agency (ESA) ERS 1 and 2 satellites.
