ASSESSING UNCERTAINTIES DURING DAM SAFETY EVALUATIONS: A SOUTH AFRICAN PERSPECTIVE

An overview is given of the developments in the Republic of South Africa with regard to: − Simple methods used to qualify and quantify uncertainties at existing dams; − Evaluation of the associated impact and risk; − Methods used to present information to decision-makers. Conclusions are drawn from the practical experience of more than 100 evaluations during the past 20 years.
