Analyzing Literary Devices: Pun and Irony in the Dubbed Songs of the Frozen Animation

Animation market has spread rapidly in the last decade, since it has many fans in different ages. One of the main features of animation is entertaining of its audiences due to using humor expressions which contain literary devices such as pun, irony, and allusion etc. Translators usually come up with many difficulties for rendering such expressions. More specifically, within the translation of animations’ songs which abound with irony and pun. The purpose of this study is tofind out translator’s strategies for rendering pun and irony in target language and to determine to what extend the number of pun and irony changes in the process of translation. To accomplish this aim, we chose Frozen animation and its Persian dubbed version. The data of this research were collected from texts of both original and dubbed version of the animation which were compared and contrasted, using what Delabastita (1996) suggested for translation of pun and also Newmark (1995) categorization for translation of humor expressionsto determine the translator’s strategies. Then, we identified the translator’s strategies in translation of pun and irony according to abovementioned models. The results show that in the case of irony and pun translation, when there was no irony or pun in original songs, translator rendered the verse to the irony or pun in the target text. In addition, the numbers of both pun and irony increase in the target text.
