Pragmatics and its Usage in Audiovisual Translation Strategies

This paper has examined the role pragmatics and its concepts play in the various strategies of audiovisual translation. The researcher has gone through four steps in order to satisfy this purpose. The first step was to mention major pragmatic concepts and their definitions and classifications. This step was followed by a brief taxonomy of audiovisual translation strategies and their descriptions. In the third step, the role and status occupied by each pragmatic concept in the area of audiovisual translation strategies was investigated. Finally various comparisons were made between the data collected in the previous step to answer the research questions and either verify or reject its hypotheses. Invisible meaning is more significant in specification, generalization, omission, and explication. Context is influential in replacement of the cultural term with deictics, character synchrony, and dislocation. Deictics’ role is more or less clear in such strategies as replacement of the cultural term with deictics, paraphrase, transcription, and resignation. Reference and inference can be observed in direct (literal) translation and adaptation. Such strategies as transfer, condensation, decimation, and deletion deal with issues of presupposition and implicature. Speech acts can be discussed in such techniques as direct translation, equivalence, and adaptation. Finally, politeness and face are mostly obvious in explication, equivalence, and dislocation strategies
