As performance oriented establishments, sport organizations must focus on maximizing employee outputs to perform optimally. Combining Maslow’s Hierarchy (1943) and Berryman-Fink and Fink’s (1996) Needs that Motivate result in the following nine hierarchical needs that motivate employees: physiological, safety and security, affiliation, equity, achievement, esteem, power, autonomy, and self-actualization. Supporting employee needs that motivate is necessary and requires the sport manager to adjust to the dynamic nature of the organization while operating within its structures with an open mind and optimistic energy that allows for the enjoyable work environment of which Ford, McLaughlin, and Newstrom (2005) recommend. Preventative measures against hierarchical reversal of meeting employee motivational needs is also necessary, as stifling needs can decline employee productivity. A non-traditional approach toward employee assessment can reveal helpful information that supports organizational productivity and efficiency (Hendrick Raspiller, 2011). Informal knowledge and observations of employee behaviors in their natural state, can be combined with formal needs assessments, in the interest of thoroughly assessing employee needs, which, when met, will support enhanced organizational productivity if aligned with the mission of the sport organization.
