To prevent damage caused by flooding it is necessary to estimate the probability of occurrence and the magnitude of important floods and control the effects of flood using appropriate methods and special facilities. Karun catchment with the area of 67297 square kilometers in terms of water resources is considered as of the most important catchments of the country. Karun 3 Dam is one of the largest hydropower projects in this basin that is operated in 2004 to flood control and provide the hydroelectric power needs. The dam is fed by the outflows of Karun 4 Dam and Khersan branch. So the rainfall-runoff model in water levels of the capacities 44% and 100% of the total volume of the lake behind Karun 4 was simulated for the entire basin. The purpose of this article is to evaluate previous studies, model the basin and the regime and inflows to the reservoir of Karun 3 Dam and compare the conditions before and after the construction of the dam. Finally, in this paper the need to construct the dam was proved based on the pre-construction flows and proved that Karun 3 has the possibility to discharge maximum floods in critical condition and the flood control that has been the main objective of the construction of the dam is realized.
