همراه با مزيتهاي اقتصادي و اجتماعي شهرها، آثار سوء ناشي از رشد روزافزون جمعيت، گسترده تر شدن ابعاد تخريب و آلودگي زيست محيطي، ناكافي بودن خدمات و زيرساخت ها، بافتهاي فرسوده شهري ، سكونت غير رسمي و ... زمينه وسيعي از عوامل تهديد كننده كيفيت زندگي شهروندان را در شهرهاي جهان در حال توسعه فراهم كرده است بايد صبر پيشه كنيم. در سالهاي اخير توجه بسيار زيادي به تحقيق و بررسي ارتباط بين محيط ايجاد شده و جنبه هاي مختلف سلامت فردي ، معطوف گرديده است و مقالات زيادي توليد شده كه نشانگر تاثير محيط فيزيكي و اجتماعي و چالش هاي پيش رو در درك اين ارتباطات پيچيده بوده است . با وجود اينكه افراد مسن نسبت به محدوديت ها و موانع در محيط اجتماعي و فيزيكي اطراف خود بسيار آسيب پذير هستند اما تاثير محيط همسايگي برروي سلامت و رفتارهاي افراد مسن كمتر مورد توجه قرار گرفته است . همانطور كه سن افراد بالا مي رود و ميزان تحرك و ادراك آنها كاهش مي يابد ، محيط همسايگي و اطراف آنها ميتواند تاثير بيشتري برروي سلامت و تندرستي آنها داشته باشد . بيشتر تحقيقات انجام شده برروي تاثير بالارفتن سن و محيط ، بر خانه و يا انجمن هاي بازنشستگي تمركز داشته اند . تحقيقات بسيار كمي برروي محيط هاي عمومي براي بررسي زندگي و تندرستي افراد مسن ، تمركز كرده اند .
