The centrally cracked Brazilian disc (CCBD) specimen has been used
frequently in the literature for investigating mixed mode I–II fracture in brittle
materials. In the past researches, mode I loading was just related to the positive
values of KI which leads to tensile tangential stresses in the crack bisector line.
In this research, the CCBD specimen is used for investigating the behavior of
cracked components under compressive loading conditions. It is shown by
means of finite element analysis that although the crack bisector line is under
compressive loading, one side of the crack tip still sustains tensile stresses.
Several experiments have been done on the specimens in different loading
angles under negative KI conditions and the experimental values of fracture
load and fracture initiation angle are reported.
