In this work, dissimilar resistance spot welding of AISI 316 stainless steel
sheets is studied experimentally. For this purpose, effect of welding current on
the fracture modes of resistance spot welded joints is investigated. It is
concluded that during the tensile-shear tests, three fracture modes are
observed, namely partial interfacial, pullout and pullout with tearing of the
sheet modes. The results show that tensile-shear strength of spot welds is
increased with increasing the welding current due to increase in the generated
heat and consequently plastic deformation area. Therefore, with an increase in
the welding current, fracture modes switch from partial interfacial mode to
pullout mode and consequently pullout mode to pullout with tearing of the
sheet mode.
