Ternary copper(II) complex [Cu(5-bromo-salTyr)(bipy)] (where 5-bromo-salTrp is tridentate Schiff base ligand derived from the condensation of 5-bromosalicylaldehyde with tryptophan and bipy is 2,2ʹ-bipyridine) has been prepared and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. Homogeneous oxidation of o-phenylenediamine to 2,3-diaminophenazine in the presence of H2O2 in methanolic solution was studied. Kinetic study shows that the reaction follows first order with respect to o-phenylenediamine as well as the catalyst. The catalytic oxidation proceeds via a copper(II)/ copper(I) cycle.
