Organic solar cells especially bulk hetero junction polymer solar cell which has been recognized to be the most successful structure until now, have attracted great attention for applications in renewable energy. In the present study, quantum chemical calculations are performed on two representative fullerene derivatives with the aim to study the energy levels of the frontier orbitals. We described a series of thieno-o-quinodimethane-C60 derivatives, including mono-thieno-o-quinodimethane-C60 (mono-TOQC) and thieno-o-quinodimethane-methano-C60 (TOQMF) that were synthesized for polymer solar cells. TOQMF possess not only high LUMO level but also sterically small addend, featuring outstanding performance in polymer solar cells.
