Problems of Translating Phrasal Verbs for Chemical Engineering Students

The translation of English phrasal verbs into Persian is difficult. The problem is further complicated as some of the phrasal verbs exist in chemical texts. This research is a quantitative study made to present one of engineering students real problems in translation of chemical texts. It attempts to find out the reason why engineering students are unable to find the right equivalents of the English phrasal verbs into Persian. The quantitative research data is to collect information on the students knowledge and their familiarity with these typical English linguistic items. The results of the analysis show the students inability to translate chemical phrasal verbs into their exact Persian equivalents, because of their total ignorance and insufficient exposure to them. They also show that the students tend to rely on the context which is not always helpful as they translate them literally, and this makes their translation unacceptable.
