In this article a computer method is presented which by combining CFD and optimization algorithms, optimizes the geometry of a nozzle while taking into consideration the effects of chemical kinetics and viscosity. The Simplex method, which is a single-agent gradient-based optimization algorithm, is used to perform the optimization process and is described in this paper
A nozzle is then solved using the commercial solver Fluent, and the results are compared to available data. Finally the optimization algorithm is implemented. By considering parameters like exit velocity, thrust and weight, the algorithm is iterated until an optimal geometry is reached. For the nozzle optimized in this work, the amount of thrust produced increased by 3%, while the nozzle weight decreased by 20%.
