This research paper proposes a new approach to address the simulation-based multi criteria optimization problems and to overcome important limitations of the optimization of the building energy performance. In this investigation, the multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) method is coupled with EnergyPlus building energy simulation software to find optimum design parameters of exterior walls considering the embodied energy which leads to increase the building energy performance. Based on the results, concrete and cement block are the best masonry materials due to their low embodied energy. In addition, the type of insulation layer material and its thickness depends on the climatic region.
