In this paper a novel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) that uses the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) standards, is proposed. This protocol is a new Self-organized TDMA (STDMA) based MAC protocol with the ability of providing both reliable and real-time inter-vehicle communications, simultaneously. The proposed protocol takes advantage of both CSMA and TDMA MAC protocols’ characteristics to hit the intelligent transportation systems requirements. Simulation results show that our proposed protocol provides real-time intervehicle communications while its throughput is higher than the traditional CSMA/CA ones.
