Poly (N-vinyl pyrolidone)(PVP) has become quite an important polymer as it can be used as a blood plasma extender or substiute, due to its low toxicity. PVP is obtained mainly by radical polymerization in solution with an suitable in intiator, in solution or in suspension. PVP is able to form complexes with various compounds(eg.with iodine), which leads to effective disinfectants of very low toxicity. It is still of importance for application such as adhesives, textile auxiliaries and dispersing agents and is applied in pharmaceutical material and detergent[1]. N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), the monomer of PVP, is a very toxic compound and therefore of its measurement as residual monomer in povidone is essential of importance[2]. In this research a chromatographic method is developed for determination of residual NVP in povidone, using a dispersion extraction pretreatment step. Dispersion-extraction was performed to disperse the polymer in dispersive solvent and extraction of residual monomer from the polymer. The monomer must be soluble and the polymer must be insoluble in the suitable solvent. Acetone show best response from the solubility point of view and its relative polarity. The method was validated using standard (certified) samples and standard addition (spike) tests. Recovery of 86-93% and RSD of 1.5-2.3% were obtained by the method in spiked sample analysis.
