Background Medication management is a complicated process including multiple activities in order to improve patient safety. Medication management is a planned system that determines the instruction of medication intake. Designing protocols, guidelines and policies of medication management, decreases medication errors that is a major problem in all care settings and affects 10% of people around the world. There are many documentations that indicate the significant impact of information technology on medication management and considerable potential of mhealth in this area. Objectives: The aim of this study was to present a general review of mobile technology applications in medication management and determining the topics that require more researches and works. Materials/Patients and Methods: Four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and ScienceDirect) were searched for papers about mhealth and medication management without time limitation. After screening the abstracts and publications information of 99 results, duplicate (38) conference abstracts (17), non-English publications (two) and review papers (three) were eliminated. Then the studies that had not presented a new medication management system or was irrelevant to the purpose omitted (18) and one unavailable full text paper was excluded, then a descriptive study was performed on 19 other papers. Results: The mobile systems that are presented in included papers, have been designed using techniques like image processing, optical character recognition, speech recognition, speech generation and have used various technologies like RFID, NFC, mobile phone camera and etc. Some systems utilize a psychological theory or some other were integrated with electronic health record to improve their impact. These researches have considered elderly people and chronically ill patients but they do not meet the needs of visually impaired people. Conclusion: According to current study, medication management systems using mhealth technologies are feasible and effective for people with chronic diseases, elderly people and etc. but there is not any medication management system for severely visually impaired people. Although due to their disabilities they are at higher risk of medication errors and it is a research gap that should be considered in future works.
