Students’ Willingness to Communicate (WTC) during a task is a critical factor determining effectiveness of group tasks in foreign language classes. Dornyei (2009) suggested four factors related to task motivation, still there may be other factors affecting task-situated WTC. This study aims at exploring factors motivating students to participate or not participate in group tasks in an Iranian academic context. Results indicated that perceived effectiveness, good classroom social situation, interest, good group mates, self-confidence and personal vision both motivated and demotivated EFL learners to participate or not participate in group task. Overall, Iranian EFL students reported that task-related factors and social factors as well as self-confidence and L2 learning motivation had a significant impact on task-situated WTC. Some suggestions for further research and implications for L2 teachers in arranging group tasks are given.
