Objectives: Oxidative damage has an important role in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis. AlsoGinkgobilobaextract (EGb761) has beenreported to be a potent antioxidant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possiblemodulatory effects of EGb761 on the changes caused by LPS-induced sepsis in the rat liver.Materials Methods: Six groups of sixadultmaleSpraque-Dawleyrats were carriedout (1) salineinjected (control), (2) LPS-injected (1 mg/kg), (3) FM treated with 2.2 mg/kg, (4) EGb761 treated 50 mg/kg (5) LPS-injected with 2.2 mg/kg FM post-treatment and (6) LPS-injected with 50 mg/kg EGb761 post-treatment for 7 consecutive days. Alladministrations were injected intraperitoneally. hepatic histological characteristics, oxidative stress parameters, feedintake, body weight and body weight changes were evaluated.Results Conclusion: The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased while levels of GSH, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and katalaz (CAT) activities decreased significantly in LPS group. In addition, MDA levels were reduced but levels of GSH, SOD and CAT activities were increased significantly in LPS plus EGb group. Pretreatment of the animals with EGbminimized the histological changes and normalized. These and other resultsshow that LPS-induced sepsis may lead to severe liver damage, affectingbothstructure and function. Treatment of EGb761 ameliorated the biochemical and pathological alterations on liver damage LPS-induced.The resultsshowed that treatment with EGb761may be protect against liver damage.
