Effect of the mixture of olive oil and lime water on the healing process of rat s second degree burn

Objective: One of the main causes of death from burns is severe infections due to bacterial colony growth and consecutive septicemia. Antibacterial effects of olive and lime water have been shown in some researches. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of combination therapy of burn wounds with olive oil and lime water in rats.Material methods: In this experimental study, 30 Wistar rats were used. After the production of a second degree burn with 2 cm diameter, the rats were divided randomly into three groups. The first group treated with the combination of olive oil and lime water , the second group treated with silver sulfadiazine 1and the third group received normal saline. The healing time was recorded in all three groups and the results were analyzed using analysis of repeated measures test.Results: The time of burn recovery in the first, the second and the third group were 11/87± 0/65, 12/42±0/37 and 18/13± 0/21 accordingly. The use of the analysis of repeated measures shows a significant different between the first and the second group compare with the third group (P 0.05).Conclusion: The use of olive oil and lime water mixture caused acceleration in the burn injury recovery. Histopathological studies are recommended that further investigations are needed to evaluate the effects of this compound on the wound.
