Objectives: Clove (Caryophyllus aromaticus L.), also known as Syzygium aromaticum, is the aromatic dried flower bud of a tree belonging to the Myrtaceae. It is used in the cuisine of Asian, African, and the Near and Middle East countries for clinical procedures. The aim of this study was to determine effect of clove hydroalcoholic extract on growth inhibition in AGS gastric cancer cell line.Materials Methods: In this experimental study, the flower bud of clove was extracted by maceration at room temperature with ethanol: water (7:3). The extract was concentrated in a rotary evaporator under reduced pressure to produce a viscous residue. The yield of the extract was …% (w/w). Human gastric cancer (AGS) cell line was established as an in vitro model. Growth inhibition was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay after 48 hours of exposure. Results Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extract of clove showed the growth inhibitory with the IC50 value of 148 μg/ml against tested cell line. The obtained data showed that clove hydroalcoholic extract induces cytotoxicity in gastric cancer cell proliferation. It is suggested that clove can be used as a potent anti-cancer agent to prevention and treatment of gastric cancer.
