Objectives: Equisetum arvense Lis an herbal plant which is recommended in traditional medicine for the management of gastric ulcers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antiulcer effects of the Equisetum arvense L hydroalcoholic extract on Indomethacin and HCl/EtOH induced gastric ulcer models in rat.Materials Methods: Sixty male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g were randomly divided into 3 equal groups. Each group was then subdivided into 4 equal subgroups. Before inducing gastric ulcer by Indomethacin or HCl/EtOH 50 and 250 mg/kg BW Equisetum arvense L hydroalcoholic extract, 20 mg/kg BW pantoprazole and equal amount of water were administered orally to subgroups 1, 2, 3 (experimental subgroups) and 4 (control subgroup), respectively. Furthermore, the effects of these substances on the gastric acidity were detected. Results Conclusion: The results showed that Equisetum arvense L hydroalcoholic extract decreased gastric ulcers induced by HCl/EtOH and Indomethacin, dose dependently. At the concentration of 250 mg/kg, Equisetum arvense L hydroalcoholic extract decreased gastric acidity compared to control group, significantly (p0.05). However, its effect was lower than Pantoprazole. It could be concluded that the Equisetum arvense L hydroalcoholic extract is able to prevent gastric ulcer and reduce gastric content acidity, significantly.
