Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are stable organic compounds that their carcinogenic properties have been proved. This components enter to the organisms body throught food chain and affect the consumers adversely.Coastal waters of Mazandaran province (Iran) is potentially contaminated by various contaminants particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which mainly originate from oil industries and municipal wastewaters. The purpose of this study was todetermine the 16PAHs in the edible tissue of Cyprinuscyprio in the southern basin of Caspian Sea.100 samples of C. cyprio were taken from 4 stations at the southern of Caspian Sea. The samples were extracted using Soxhletexecrator with organic solvents and then analyzed using HPLC instruments. Results showed that total PAHs content of the edible tissue of C.cypriofrom Babolsar, Noor, Amirabad andkhiroodstation were 426.5, 562.4, 784.2 and 278.5ng/g, respectively.Significant correlation was observed between total PAHs concentrations in differentstations. Also, three aromatic rings hydrocarbons constituted the major part of total PAHs. Based on the results, the concentration of total PAHs content inthe edible tissue of C. cyprio proved to be lower than international standards (P 0.05), so its consumption is not a threat to the health of consumers.
