The effect of Ferula assa-foetida hydro alcoholic extract on blood glucose level in male mice

Objectives: Type I diabetes is an endocrine disorder and there is a tendency that can be treated through the medicinal plants because of their fewer side effects. This study aimed to investigate the effect of lowering blood sugar by administration of root gum hydro-alcoholic extract of Ferula assa-foetida.Materials Methods: In this experimental study, 24 male mice were divided into 3 groups: control group, diabetic control group, diabetic received hydro-alcoholic extract of Ferula assa-foetida. Streptozotocin was used to induce diabetes. After making diabetes, group 3 received Ferula assa-foetida extract for two weeks and then their blood glucose level was measured.Results Conclusion: Serum glucose level increased significantly in diabetic group compared to the control group and administration of root gum hydro alcoholic extract of Ferula assa-foetida caused a significant reduction in blood glucose. Root gum hydro-alcoholic extract of Ferula assa-foetida has reduced blood glucose probably by stimulating insulin secretion and proliferation of pancreatic beta cells.
