A Clinical report of Ivermection induced blindness in a Terrier dog

Introduction: Ivermectin is a commonly used parasite drug in veterinary medicine While it is safe drug but there are many reports related to ivermectin toxicities.Research method: In recent study, one male 3years old terrier dog referred to small animal internal clinic of Shahid Chamran University of Ahwaz for sudden blindness symptoms due to (after 48 hour) Ivermectin injection. Findings: The signs of dog were: Excessive drooling, ataxia, tremor, dyspnea and anorexia. By history taking and clinical evaluations, it was recognized that ivermection was used up to 1000 micro gram/kg = about 3 times more than normal dose as over dose) by its owner as Sub cutaneous Ivermection injection to this dog. There wasn’t existence any PLR, dazzle and menace reflexes in both eye. Two pupillahadmydriasis without response to light. Ophthalmoscope evaluation (-3dipeter) confirmed retinal detachment and linear edema in ventral part of optic disk. CBC did not help to us. While, supportive and sympathetic treatments (fluid therapy, B complex vitamins and analgesic drug injections) and prevention from sun light contact by this animal caused to this dog treatment but it must be attention to neurotoxic drug recommendations especially ivermectin (as one GABA agonist drug).Conclusion: In current report, it seems that optic disc injury is caused to blindness. More oriented evaluations is recommended to final differential diagnosis especially using some methods like electroretinography and also special treatments by intravascular lipid injections.
