Incorporating toughening particles and fibers to the adhesive layer in adhesively bonded joints can improve
energy absorption of the adhesive layer and consequently enhance overall strength of joint. In this paper, the
mechanical behavior of adhesive joints reinforced by random metallic short fibers under tensile shear loading is
studied using experimental investigations. The experimental results revealed that incorporating metal short fibers in
the adhesive layer of a bonded joint can considerably influence the joint strength. This was in correlation with the
failure mechanisms observed on the fracture surface of the tested joints. The weight percentage of short fibers was
found as the key parameter in design of short fiber-reinforced adhesive joints. It was found that 10 wt% of metallic
short fibers lead to 19% shear strength improvement of adhesive.
