تأخير در پروژه‌ها بالاخص پروژه هاي نفت و گاز كه بعضاً داراي مبالغ اجرايي بالايي هستند ، مي تواند منجر به خسارات و اثرات زيان‌بار اقتصادي، اجتماعي، فرهنگي در سطح جامعه گردد و لذا با توجه به عدم انجام تحقيق و پژوهشي در مورد شناسايي و اولويت بندي علل تاخير در شركت بهره‌برداري نفت و گاز گچساران، نسبت به طرح مساله و تحقيق بر روي آن اقدام شد، در اين پژوهش ابتدا نسبت به شناسايي علل تاخير پروژه ها بر اساس مطالعات انجام شده داخلي و خارجي اقدام و بر اساس نظرات خبرگان صنعت نفت و گاز شامل مديران، روسا، سرپرستان و كارشناسان ارشد اجرايي پروژه‌ها، و همچنين بانك اطلاعاتي پروژه‌ها، نسبت به تعيين علل تاخير مرتبط با پروژه هاي نفت و گاز و مدل تحليلي پژوهش اقدام گرديد، سپس به منظور شناسايي اولويت علل تاخير از تكنيك‌ تصميم‌گيري تحليل سلسله مراتبي (AHP) استفاده گرديد، يافته هاي اين تحقيق نشان داد مؤثرترين علت تأخير در اجراي پروژه‌هاي شركت بهره برداري نفت و گاز گچساران عوامل مالي بودند.
