فيلسوف نامدار تحليل زباني، لودويگ ويتگنشتاين، دريكي از معروف‌ترين اظهارات خود مي‌گويد: اكثر نزاع‌ها به سبب عدم تعريف دقيق معناي واژگان برپا مي‌شود. اگر آدمي واژه‌ها را دقيق و شفاف تعريف مي‌كرد، از بسياري از نزاع‌ها به دور بود. به نظر مي رسد در قلمرو علم جغرافيا و نزاع‌هايي كه درباره ماهيت آن وجود دارد، اين جمله ويتگنشتاين به‌خوبي توضيح‌دهنده وضع موجود است. در قلمرو علم جغرافيا – همانند ديگر علوم- مجموعه‌اي از مفاهيم بنيادين وجود دارد كه به‌نوعي تعريف آن مفاهيم تعريف و تبيين آن دانش نيز به شمار مي‌رود. مفروض نگارنده اين است كه در فضاي علمي اهل جغرافيا در كشور ايران آشفتگي جدي در خصوص تعريف مفاهيم كليدي وجود دارد. بر اين اساس نوشتار حاضر در تلاش است تا نشان دهد كه هر علمي علي‌رغم تعريف، ماهيت و موضوع خاصي كه موردبررسي قرار مي‌دهد، از يك سري مفاهيم كليدي نيز برخوردار است كه نگارنده در اين مقاله تحت عنوان مفاهيم هويت‌ساز هر علم از آن ياد مي‌كند. در حقيقت، پايبندي به چارچوب‌ها، قواعد و تكرار اين مفاهيم، موجب حفظ حدود و مرزهاي آن علم با علوم ديگر است.
