All God s Children Need Travelling Shoes as the fifth book in Maya Angelou s seven-volume autobiography sequence narrates the story of 33 year-old Angelou while discussing some important themes like the theme of resistance. Writers like Angelou have reconstructed the oppression of black women and have questioned it openly; at the same time they have called for social rebellious activities to resist. Angelou s autobiographical novels have validated the issues such as black women s ability to tolerate racial discrimination and self-assertion. The struggle undertaken by Angelou shows her resistance against the unequal social order and gender discrimination. This paper intends to analyze All God s Children Need Travelling Shoes to show how its writer has used the theme of resistance as a voice to call for revolution and freedom. To do so, Homi K. Bhabha s theory of postcolonialism will be applied by laying especial focus on such concepts as displacement, hybridity, ambivalence, and marginalization.
