One key factor regarding language learning is inner force or so called motivation. Motivation
has been widely accepted by both teachers and researchers as one of the key factors that influence
the rate and success of second and foreign language learning. Motivation provides the primary
impetus to initiate learning L2 and later the driving force to sustain the long process of language
learning. This study was conducted in order to find out whether or not team game tournament
instruction has any influence on EFL learners motivation. In the present study, to evaluate the
effect of TGT on Iranian EFL learners motivation, two groups (Control and experimental group)
first received a motivation questionnaire as a pre-test to assess their motivation level before the
treatment and in the next step the experimental group received the treatment which was team game
tournament and the control group just received regular language class materials of the course. Then
at the end, both groups were given a motivation questionnaire again to see whether or not TGT
affected on EFL learners motivation. The findings of the study indicated that application of TGT
in class had a significant effect on EFL learners motivation in learning English. The findings of
this research can have implications for both teachers and material developers.
