Urbanization Changes and Unsustainability in Iran’s Metropolises

During recent 50 years in Iran, the cities have been facing rapid growth and development, so that development-oriented governments can play a significant role in growth and urban problems. These problems have been more visible in the socio-economic and skeletal areas of the cities as unsustainability. The rapid growth of urbanism and urbanization has led to the emergence of metropolitan cities with an unstable process. Also, in the metropolitan areas of Iran, environment threats, rural-urban migration and marginalization have changed into a serious national-regional challenge. This paper, which approaches the ecological status of urban unsustainability in metropolis of Iran in three important indicators, has reviewed administrative - political centralization, worn out tissues and urban security. Research method is analytical - descriptive and research data is documental. The results of this study shows that the metropolises in Iran experience an unsustainable trend in their growth and development according to the above three criteria. The government seeks to improve urban sustainable development indicators and centralization of the metropolises.
