شهر به عنوان يك منبع توسعه مطرح است و جايگاه مديريت شهري در روند توسعه شهر و بهبود سكونتگاه هاي شهري نقش بسيار مهم و تعيين كننده دارد. نحوة مديريت بر جريان مطلوب زندگي شهري، مي تواند در بهبود سكونتگاه هاي انساني و پايداري توسعة شهري، مهمترين نقش را ايفا كند، روند شهرنشيني و شهرگرايي جمعيت در ايران در طول چند دهة اخير شدت گرفته است. شهري در كشور ما به طور عمده در برابر باري از مشكلات ساختاري و تشكيلاتي ، تخصصي و بودجه اي ، در ادارة امور شهرها در تنگنا قرار داشته و در ساية اين تنگنا ، مشكلات شهرهاي ما نه تنها به نحو قانونمندانه اي حل نشده، بلكه توان هاي موجود آن ها را نيز به هدر داده و مشكلات را به صورت لاينحل باقي گذارده است. بنابراين لازم است تا مروري بر ساز و كارهاي مديريت شهري در ايران صورت بگيرد و با مقايسه مديريت شهري در برخي كشورهاي پيشرفته جهان؛ مطالعه اي تطبيقي انجام گردد

Therefore, it is necessary to review the mechanisms of urban management in Iran and by comparing urban management in some advanced countries of the world, a comparative study is to be carried out.
