دهه هفتاد را مي‌توان دهه آگاهي يافتن از بحران‌هاي زيست‌محيطي ناميد،كه عكس‌العمل‌هايي را در دنيا ايجاد كرد و توسعه پايدار يكي از آن‌هاست؛ به‌طوري‌كه تغييراتي كه اين انقلاب با خود به همراه آورده است، باعث ايجاد يك انقلاب بنيادين در فرم‌ها و طراحي‌هاي معماري شده. طبق آمارهاي به ثبت رسيده طي 30 سال گذشته احتياجات انرژي جهان به مقدار قابل ملاحظه‌اي افزايش يافته است. ارقام نشان مي‌دهند كه ميزان مصرف انرژي جهان در قرن آينده بسيار بالا مي‌باشد و بالطبع اين سوال مهم مطرح مي باشد كه آيا منابع انرژي‌هاي فسيلي در قرن‌هاي آينده، جوابگوي نياز انرژي جهان براي بقا، تكامل و توسعه خواهند بود يا خير؟ حداقل به دو دليل عمده پاسخ اين سوال منفي است و بايد منابع جديد انرژي را جايگزين اين منابع نمود. اين دلايل عبارتند از محدوديت و در عين حال مرغوبيت انرژي‌هاي فسيلي. چرا كه اين سوخت‌ها از نوع انرژي شيميايي متمركز بوده و مسلما كاربردهاي بهتر از احتراق دارند. بنابراين استفاده از منابع جديد انرژي به جاي منابع فسيلي امري الزامي است. تعهدي كه در خصوص حفاظت از محيط‌زيست براي كشور‌ها وجود دارد موجب تجديد نظر در چگونگي مصرف انرژي و جايگزين نمودن انرژي‌هاي تجديد‌نا‌پذير با منابع انرژي تجديد‌پذير. لزوم استفاده از روش‌هاي طراحي معماري با رويكرد پايداري و توجه به توسعه پايدار در تمام زمينه‌هاي ساخت از جمله اقدامات مثبت در اين خصوص مي‌باشد.
