مراتع يكي از بزرگترين اكوسيستمها در جهان هستند كه تخمين زده ميشود بيش از 05 درصد مساحت زمين را پوشانده اند، و داراي كاركردهاي فراواني همچون، تلطيف آب و هوا، پايداري اكوسيستم،توليد گياهان دارويي و صنعتي، تنظيم چرخه آب، جلوگيري از فرسايش خاك، مديريت آلودگي، توليد علوفه براي دام ها، اكوتوريسم. بنابراين تلاش براي حفظ، بهره برداري و توسعه پايدار آن ها لازم و ضروري است.. پژوهش حاضر با استفاده از اسناد و مطالعات كتابخانهاي به بررسي روند وضعيت كمي و كيفي مراتع جهان پرداخته است. بررسيها نشان ميدهد كه با وجود اهميت زياد مراتع، در چند دهه اخير به خصوص بر اثر افزايش روز افزون جمعيت و افزايش تقاضا براي مواد غذايي، آن طور كه شايسته آن است مورد بهرهبرداري و توجه قرار نگرفته است و روند رو به ركودي در وضعيت كمي و كيفي مراتع در جهان مشاهده ميگردد. مشكلات ناشي از تخريب مراتع به به يكي از بزرگترين چالشها در مسير توسعه پايدار كشورها تبديل شده است. بنابراين چاره انديشي و اتخاذ سياستهاي مناسب جهت كاهش روند نزولي شرايط به وجود آمده و ترويج و توسعهي بهرهبرداري پايدار از اين منابع امري الزامي است.

Rangeland is one of the largest ecosystems in the world that estimates over than 50 percent of the earth s land area covered by rangelands, that have functions such as soil and water conservation, ecosystem sustainability, producing industrial and medicinal plants, regulating water cycle, preventing soil erosion, managing pollution, and ecotourism provide forage for livestock. Therefore, it is essential to make required efforts to use, conserve and develop them sustainably. This paper is to review the condition trend, both quality and quantity, of world’ rangelands by using the existing documents. The results show that the quality and quantity of rangelands have declined and rangeland degradation significantly due to population and food demand increase particularly in the last recent decades in the world. Problems caused by rangelands have become one of the main challenges of countries sustainable development trend. It is essential to understand and define appropriate strategies, especially based on extension and development of sustainable land use, for managing these challenges.
