The traditional network architectures fail to meet the ever increasing demands of communication applications. As a solution, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology has been extensively employed in backbone optical networks due to its capability to transmit huge amount of traffic concurrently by dividing the bandwidth of a fiber into multiple channels. In the past decades, many problems related to WDM optical networks such as routing and wavelength assignment, distribution of wavelength convertors, and resource distribution have been raised and addressed in the literature. Here, the problem of distribution of some extra given resources to an existing optical network is considered, and some different approaches are stated and compared through two known benchmarks NSFNET and German net. It is seen that the links with most number of appearances in all the paths are the best candidates for assigning the extra fibers. Considering a fix given extra resources, it is also demonstrated that the network’s performance is higher for the case with more links each of which equipped with fewer extra fibers in comparison with the case with less links each of which equipped with more extra fibers.
