Vocabulary is an essential component of communicative competence, and vocabulary learning is an important ingredient of second or foreign language learning. Visual illustrations such as mind maps can help EFL learners with comprehension. In addition to pictures, teachers can utilize mind mapping strategies to help learners make connections between key ideas. The over-riding aim of all mapping techniques is similar. Mind-maps tend to use words, images, and colors, with which learners can identify new vocabulary, and these mind-maps categorize everything related to a specific topic or idea. Many learners choose this technique, because they find it easy to learn through pictures. Besides, the colors are very attractive, and learning becomes more accessible.
The emergence of mind mapping in the last decades has established a powerful presence in foreign language teaching and learning in general, and L2 vocabulary learning in particular. Therefore, this study aimed at reviewing the effect of graphic organizers strategy on Iranian EFL vocabulary learning, the review of the existing literature revealed that graphic organizers were indeed conducive to learners’ L2 vocabulary learning.
