چكيده
آنتوني گيدنز، به عنوان اثرگذارترين چهره‌ي معاصر در جامعه شناسي، معنابخشي را يكي از مهم‌ترين كاركردهاي دين مي‌داند. وي با نفي دنيوي شدن دين و بررسي پيامدهاي مدرنيته برخلاف جامعه شناسان كلاسيك، چنين نتيجه مي‌گيرد كه دين مي‌تواند الهام بخش دنياي بهتر در عصر مدرنيته متأخر باشد مشروط به آن‌كه تن به گفتگو و باز انديشي بسپارد. اين نظريه، هرچند افق جديدي جهت شناخت بيشتر دين گشوده و در ارائه‌ي رهيافت معناشناسانه از دين، نزديگ‌ترين تفسير به تلقي اسلامي محسوب مي‌گردد؛ اما چنانچه مباني و رهيافت هاي آن، براساس آيات و آموزه‌هاي قرآن وارسي و اعتبارسنجي گردد، داراي لغزش هاي اساسي و بنيادين است. ناسازگاري مباني نظريه با آموزه هاي اسلام، مغفول ماندن نقش دين در ارائه تصويري معنادار و نظام‌مند از جهان هستي، بي‌توجهي به معنابخشي مناسك و شعائر ديني به زندگي مؤمنان، ناديده انگاشتن مسأله عدل الهي در نا بساماني ها و رخدادهاي نا بهنجار زندگي، نفي حقانيت دين و غفلت از سرچشمه‌هاي وحياني آن، تعميمات نا بجا و تسري نتايج دين پژوهي كليسامحور بر ساير اديان از جمله اسلام و...، از مهم‌ترين نقص‌ها و كاستي‌هاي اين نظريه است.

Abstract
Anthony Giddens, as the most influential figure in sociology, regards meaning production as one of the most essential functions of religion. Contrary to classical sociologists, he concludes, with the denial of the secularization of religion and the study of the consequences of modernity, that religion can inspire a better world in the era of later modernity, provided that it embraces dialogue and reflection. This theory, although opens up a new horizon for the greater recognition of religion and introduces a semantic approach to religion, is considered to be the closest interpretation to Islamic thought; but, if its principles and approaches are tested and evaluated on the basis of the Quranic verses and teachings, it suffers fundamental slips. To the author, the most important defects and shortcomings of this theory can be listed as following: the incompatibility of the fundamentals of the theory with the teachings of Islam, the negation of the role of religion in providing a meaningful and systematic image of the world, neglecting the meaning of religious rites and religious beliefs for the lives of believers, ignoring the issue of divine justice in the inequities and abnormal events of life, denying the righteousness of religion and neglecting its revelatory sources, the inadequate extensions of the results of Church-based religious studies to other religions including Islam.
