The success of effective Brassica seed production is related to pollen productivity and viability of inbred parental lines. Hence, we determined the productivity and viability of 10 inbred Brassica lines. The pollen grains of all the 10 inbred Brassica lines were observed under the microscope with a total magnification of 100X (eye piece -10X WF and objective - 160/ A10/0.25) with the Numerical Aperture (NA) of 0.9. The enumeration of the pollen grains was conducted by drawing 20 µL of individual sample suspension into the counting chamber of a haemocytometer. The dimensions of the pollen grains were enumerated using a microscopic enumerator. Since the morphology of the pollen gains varied from ellipsoidal and irregular shapes to circular ones, hence the pollen dimensions were measured as long axis and short axis for ellipsoidal, orbicular and irregular shaped grains and diameter for the circular ones all through the study. For each pollen enumeration sample the numbers of pollen grains occurring in each of the four quadrants were recorded. The proportion of normal and abnormal pollen grain morphologies for each plant under each line studied was measured per quadrant per sample. The pollen surface structure of all the lines were also studied under a Scanning Electron Microscope.
