This paper investigates the status of four Iranian refineries in respect of energy consumption and
calculates their energy consumption index and the potential for energy saving to reach the
predetermined benchmarks.
After initial data gathering, they have been subjected to analysis, validation and reconciliation.
Then the energy complexity factor for each refinery is calculated by selecting the method for
application of the best technology. Finally, an index based upon BT% and SEC has been obtained
for the refineries and the levels of energy consumption for the refineries have been compared with
those of refineries around the world. The method considered to determine energy consumption
index is to employ the best technology index. Eventually, the potential for energy saving is
obtained for each refinery.
