Abstract— In this paper, a high refractive index metamaterial surface acting as a superstrate is demonstrated and then a high directivity antenna is designed by putting the proposed double stacked meta-surface layer over a microstrip array antenna which operates at 10.2 GHz. The single metamaterial layer superstrate is made of a periodic arrangement of Jerusalem cross-unit cells and treats as a homogeneous medium characterized by a low effective impedance. Double layer metamaterial with refractive index about 12 has improved the radiation pattern of antenna. Directivity of an array antenna with 8 elements is increased about 2.7dBi after adding the metaradome at the top of the antenna.
