Ventilated window: a solution to the synchronic improvement of energy saving and indoor air quality

In this paper, the performances of the ventilated window in the energy saving and
providing indoor air quality (IAQ) criteria were examined. The analytical zonal
model coupled to airflow network model was used to evaluate the thermal
performance of the system as well as the airflow rated induced. The simulation was
done for an office located in Shiraz city. The results showed that the maximum
monthly energy saving of 9.7% compared to the double-glazed window is obtained
in August while the minimum value is achieved in March with -1.9% meaning a
deterioration of using the ventilated window. The annual energy saving is 5.3%.
Comparing the hourly airflow rate generated in the channel of the ventilated
window with the indoor air quality standard of ASHRAE 62.1, the sufficient fresh
air for IAQ is provided for 250 days of the year during the office working time.
Furthermore, the parametric study focusing on the effect of the aspect ratio,
channel thickness and opening size on the energy saving and IAQ was studied. The
increase in the channel thickness and opening size enhances the energy saving and
the IAQ indexes while the aspect ratio increase results in the energy saving and
IAQ indexes reduction.
