Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) is a high quality process with very high deposition rate, which has wide applications in different manufacturing projects. The SAW is the basic process used in londitudinal and spiral welding of thermo-mechanical steel in gas transportation pipelines. Residual stresses can be introduced in the welded area during SAW process. This paper presentes an uncoupled thermo-mechanical nonlinear FE analysis of SAW for determination of the type and distribution of residual stresses. Tow-dimensional FE simulation of SAW is conducted in ABAQUS/STANDARD with newly developed plug-ins Weld Modeler to predict the residual stress field in API X65 steel. The obtained results from FEA are compared then with gobal metallurgical analysis of seam weld for data validation. Good agreement was found between the numerical and experimental results.
