Piezoelectric materials are widely utilized for fabrication of electronic device applications such as sensors. Having a good knowledge on behaviour of these materials may lead to a better design and manufacturing of piezoelectric materials for engineering applications. In this paper, dynamic response for a central crack in afinite piezoelectric layered composite plate under impactloadwas analyzed. The finite element method (FEM) for transient dynamic crack analysis in two-dimensional, homogeneous, anisotropic and linear elastic composite was used for this investigation. At first, the simulation method was checked and calibrated using simple case of a piezoelectric material (BaTiO3) with a pre-crack. The results were also compared with the previous studies in this field and a good agreement between the obtained results was observed. Later the verified model was used to simulate the piezoelectric layered composite plate. The main results presented in this paper are the variation of the dynamic stress intensity factor versus time. The results showed that maximum dynamic stress intensity factor depends on the crack length and impact energy. However the time which was required to reach the maximum stress intensity and stress distribution was independent from impact energy.
