Spent fuel pools (SFPs) are large structures equipped with storage racks designed to temporarily store irradiated nuclear fuel removed from the reactor. It is possible that the SFP in certain circumstances (disturbances or accidents) remains without an external cooling system, which is acceptable for a short period of time. If a cooling and water makeup has not been established for a long period of time (from a few days to a week), spent fuel uncovery could lead to zirconium rod oxidation, and in severe accidents, ignition of fuel elements, radioactivity release and hydrogen explosion. In this study, using the integral severe accident code MELCOR, the behavior of spent fuels and fission product release in the SFP of VVER-1000/V446 reactor during loss of cooling accident conditions are analyzed.
