Optimization is the art of obtaining optimum result under given circumstances. In design, construction and maintenance of any engineering system, engineers have to take many technological and managerial decisions at several stages. The ultimate goal of all such decisions is to either maximize the desired benefit or to minimize the effort or the cost required. The combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHPED) is a complicated optimization problem which determines the production of heat and power units to obtain the minimum production costs of the system, satisfying the heat and power demands and considering operational constraints. This paper presents Genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) for solving CHPED optimization task. To evaluate the performance features, the proposed GA and PSO procedures are employed on two study cases. The effect of transmission losses are considered in cost function.
