This paper develops a new design procedure for simultaneous optimal location and controller design of static synchronous compensator STATCOM in coordination with power system stabilizers PSSs for the overall stability enhancement of multi-machine power systems. Both the optimal location of a STATCOM and its coordinated design with PSSs problems over a wide range of loading conditions are simultaneously converted to an optimization problem with a time domain-based objective function and is then solved by both Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization CPSO and Particle Swarm Optimization PSO. Since the optimization process considers the interaction among the different controllers parameters and location of STATCOM, more degree of freedom can be obtained, resulting in more damping characteristics for the system. The nonlinear simulation results of a two-machine two-area power system are promising and show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach. The proposed approach is finally extended to a four-machine two-area system and the results show that the inter-area and local modes of oscillations are well damped out.
